Hereditary hepatic porphyrias include acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), mixed porphyria (PV) and hereditary coproporphyria (HC). In the past 30 years, more knowledge has been gained about the synthesis and control mechanisms of porphyrins. However, the mechanism of the neurological manifestations characteristic of hepatic porphyria remains unclear. This article reviews the clinical, pathological and biochemical data so far related to this aspect.
