Abstract

This article studies the involvement of glial cells in the uptake of certain substances that act as synaptic transmitters in the central nervous system. The notion that glial cells may be involved in the inactivation of synaptic transmitters received initial support from Koelle's 1955 study, in which he showed that although specific acetylcholinesterase was confined to neuronal cells, the Nonspecific cholinesterase, however, is widely distributed in glial cells. Although the nonspecific enzyme is largely unimportant in terminating synaptic transmission, it may play a role in eliminating acetylcholine escaping the synaptic cleft. role. The authors studied glial-rich
