Abstract

In recent years, a lot of literature has been accumulated on the relationship between extracranial carotid artery disease and cerebral and/or retinal ischemia and infarction. Angiography and carotid endarterectomy (CE) have been widely used to treat this patient population. For patients with asymptomatic carotid murmur, CE surgery is often performed to prevent stroke. Analysis of a large number of existing literature reports shows that the surgical stroke and mortality rates vary greatly, ranging from less than 2% to 86%, and there are many reasons for this. Most literatures report that the mortality rate is between 0% and 2%.
